Visiting contemporary art spaces in Queens
On Saturday we had lovely weather, windy, but sunny and to warm for a jacket most of the time. We made most of it and went to Queens, where we first visited the Socrates Sculpture Park, a cool free park with sculptures of unknown NY artists. It is right at the East River, so you have a nice view on Manhattan, too. The sculptures range from “fury trees” and huge rubber eggs to wind and sound installations. It’s not only art people coming there, but it’s a great hang out for the whole neighborhood.
We then tried to catch a bus to PS1 - haha, not running on weekends. So we walked for an hour through the Queens industrial area, but with stunning views on Manhattan and Queensboro Bridge. Lots of possibilities for Patrick to take pictures again.
Now, PS1, the MoMA “daughter” for contemporary art, is definitely one of my favorite art spots in NYC already, although we have only seen half of it yet. We have to come back some time! It is in a renovated school building which makes up for an excellent atmosphere for the art works. Impressive was, for example, the heating cellar in which there was a sound installation of a “prrrrr”-ing cat, very loud and in every corner of this darkish and rather scary room. I also liked the Pipilotti Rist video “Selbstlos im Lavabad” which was in a 3-5 cm-hole in the wooden floor. At the moment, one of the temporary exhibitions is “Music is a better noise“. It shows works by musicians in relation to fine art and by artist who work with music or sound. Some stuff is related to Brian Eno and the Ramones (gee, I adore these haircuts!!!) and some other work tells you everything about the clothes the Rolling Stones wore the many times they got arrested for drug abuse.
Here are some pictures from Long Island City.

How nice to read that you have been having sunny weather. Here we have more gloom than anything else. You’ll be real art experts by the time you leave New York. Continue to enjoy your stay.
Viele liebe GrĂ¼sse
