Fashion, Hipsters, and Shopping
NYC is the capital of fashion as is proven unmistakably not only by hundreds of fashion and designer shops but also by all the hipsters running around here (and in Williamsburg, “hipster haven”, of course). What is a “hipster” is the big question and none of the New Yorkes would admit to be one. We think that this guy or these folks here are pretty nice samples of hipsters …
Shopping is not an easy task here, however. If you take the naive approach, you may end up accidentially at the far too exclusive Bergdorf Goodman where you are served with shoes and coffee while seated on a Rokoko sofa or at the hysterical teen shop Abercrombie & Fitch (pure horror to me!) or you may pop into Macy’s (they call themselves “the biggest shop in the world”) “quickly” and are completely overwhelmed by the size of it (10 stories or so, 1 whole block). I think I like most the little boutiques and second hand and vintage stores in East Village and Williamsburg, such as Beacon’s Closet, my favorite. A very special and attractive NYC experience are also the designer bargain stores that sell individual pieces for much(!) less than usual (e.g. the huge designer bargain department store Century 21 calls itself “NY’s best kept secret” and then there is Loehmann’s (haha!) in Chelsea and Filene’s Basement in the Upper West Side). Man, I wish I had a whole year here just for shopping …
